Recap & Photos | Kid Cudi brings the Rage to Chicago with “The Rebel Ragers Tour”

Yup Yuppers, Mr. Rager, Kid Cudi himself took a break from the moon and landed in Tinley Park for an unforgettable night Members of the Rage this past Friday.

The Rebel Ragers tour rolled into the Chicago adjacent suburb of Tinley Park Friday night at the Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre. Fans have been waiting to see Kid Cudi live since the Insano: Engage the Rage Tour was announced in 2024, but unfortunately due to Cudi breaking his foot during a performance at Coachella in the same year, he had to cancel. Nonetheless, Cudi did promise the ragers that he would tour again, and he for sure kept his promise with The Rebel Ragers Tour.

Kicking off the night and setting the tone for the night was frequent collaborator and Cleaveland native Chip the Ripper. Chip had the pit rocking during his opening set – he even tossed small souvenirs to the audience and stated he would be “back later”. What could that mean? Next was the Grammy nominated hit-maker DJ A-Trak. A-Trak continued to keep the rage building as his set was mixed with rap, rock, EDM, and everything in between. As the night went on, the more the music kept playing, more of a familiar aroma began to fill the air, the people were getting ready. Before the controlled chaos could commence, Legendary rapper and OutKast frontman Big Boi hit the stage along with Sleepy Brown. Big Boi had the audience in a trance going through his solo hits and Outkast gems.

From rap legend to music icon, It was now time. Taking a look around the amphitheatre, there was no empty sits, even the lawn was packed. It should be noted that after Big Boi’s set – there were crew members setting up the stage for Kid Cudi’s set. Before the tour began, Cudi took to Instagram to inform fans that his stage would have a one of kind look with amazing visuals. With that said, this stage was definitely a game changer.

It was now time. The mood has changed, and chants of “Cudi” echo throughout the venue. At 9:08pm, the lights went down, and Kid Cudi made his appearance in front of the crowd, rocking his new Off-White collection from head to toe (definitely need the hoodie when released), signature red mic in hand, sitting in the corner of this rectangular box. This wasn’t just an ordinary box, no this stage layout would display different visuals through the night – the visuals had a connection to every song performed. This would be the one of the first concerts seemingly encourages all members of the audience no matter where they’re sitting to looking at the screens as it looked like you were watching a live music video. It was indeed a visual spectacular.

Cudi opened up his set with “REAL ONES NEVER DIE” from his latest EP HAVE U BN 2 HEAVEN @ NITE?. The famous hums, the live vocals, Kid Cudi was in rare form on Friday. He took a moment to inform the audience that he would take them on a trip through his entire discography. Day one fans were thrilled to hear some rare jams like “Superboy”, “Chunky” and “love.”.

As Cudi mentioned, he would perform songs from each of his projects, to make this possible, a lot of the tracks performed were cut off after the first verse. In my section, a lot of people would get hyped for the second verse of certain songs to kick in and instantly deflate when it ended abruptly.

Insano received some love with tracks “AT THE PARTY” and “BLUE SKY” (I was hoping for “FUNKY WIZARD SMOKE” to be played, but I digress). Even to some surprise, Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven got shown some love. It was fitting that “Confused!” was a part of the setlist as Cudi debuted the track in Chicago at Lollapalooza in 2015.

Notorious fan-favorites “Day ‘n’ Nite”, “Mojo So Dope”, and “Maui Wowie” were of course met with massive crowd participation, but nothing was like when “Mr. Rager” was performed. From the fire visuals (literally flames were on display), crowd screaming at the top of their lungs, and Cudi screaming the lyrics and chorus was a sight to see.

After Mr. Rager, there was a moment where the audience had a chance to calm themselves as there was a 5-minute intermission. During the intermission the stage displayed Kid Cudi’s artwork of the character Scotty Ramon floating around a pink and blue sky.

Cudi closed out the second part of the concert with the track “love”, belting out the chorus flawlessly. He thanked Chicago and said, “until next time”. This however was not the end, but the beginning of a four-song encore. As mentioned earlier in the night, Chip the Ripper did return to join Cudi for a medley of songs including “Just What I Am”. The KIDS SEE GHOSTS track “Reborn” was a welcomed addition. Before sending everyone home, he sent them into frenzy as the almost 2 hours concluded with “Pursuit of Happiness (Steve Aoki remix)”. Cudi’s daughter Vada joined him on stage before thanking everyone and sending the audience home on a high (some may been literally high) note to close out the show on a very hyped night.

If there was any doubt that Kid Cudi may have lost a step, that was proven untrue. Cudi raised a generation with his music, and that was shown by the support he received in Chicago (Tinley Park) on Friday. The visuals, the setlist, the performance was top notch. I’ve seen Kid Cudi live on numerous occasions, and quite frankly he doesn’t miss when it comes to live performances. Don’t make the mistake on not seeing Cudi this time around, you will miss out on a phenomenal show.
