Interview | Porn And Chicken

From humble beginnings to the main stage of Spring Awakening. This is Porn And Chicken.

What do you think of when you hear the name Porn and Chicken? The obvious comes to mind – chicken and that stuff that’s pretty much everywhere you look. Well you wouldn’t be too far off as the group describes themselves as “Lewd, Crude, Lascivious and Licentious”. That’s a perfect way of putting it. The Chicago based group consists of 4 members – Dom Brown, Phives, Orville Kline, and Miss Ammunition

Before being known for throwing over-the-top parties on Monday nights at the Evil Olive, PnC was first a punk rock/alternative party crew with electro elements mixed in. Some of those elements are still there as they took to the Electronic Stage this past Saturday at the Spring Awakening Music Festival. The set consisted of a mix of EDM meets rap/punk/and all in between. The hour long set kept the energy at an all-time high with antics that included a flag waver, female dancers, a hyped chicken running back and forth, and Miss Ammunition lighting up the place with sparks. The set came to an end with PnC paying tribute to fallen founding member Henry Smith.

This was unlike any DJ set I’ve seen all weekend. I had the great opportunity to sit down and chat with the group after their set.

What’s the story behind the formation Porn And Chicken?

Dom: Initially, we started at a bar in Wrigley –Throwing parties under the name Beer, Chicken and Porn. Shortly after we changed it to Porn And Chicken

Can we talk about the meaning of the name?

Porn And Chicken: [Laughs]

Dom: It’s real simple bro… [laughs]

Miss Ammunition: There’s porn and there’s chicken. If you come early enough [Monday parties] we have four types of chicken – BBQ, Original, Honey BBQ, Teriyaki. But if you’re special, you can have some of the pizza we have down stairs.

How do you prep for huge performances?

Dom: It’s no different than what we do to prepare each Monday. You have to ask yourself, “what separates all these DJs?” Is it the visuals? So if we weren’t up there without our shit, we would be just another DJ up there playing. We want to stick out, we want to be better than everybody else.

Orville: We try to debut new music. At these festivals, so many djs are playing the same songs. So we go out of our way to make our performance unique and standout.

Was the passion or dream always there to become DJs?

Orville: I’ve been playing music since I was in the 4th grade, when I first picked up a saxophone. It comes more so from the love of music. It’s pretty awesome to do what you love for a living. We’re just happy to get paid for what we love.

Phives: It’s not just one dream, day by day, you want to get better and do better. Give more to the fans. We want to continue to grow, we want to bring it to other cities.

How would you rank this Spring Awakening performance with your other festival performances?

Dom: It’s hard to rank them because they’re all different in their own way. There’s always an instance where it makes each festival special. We’re just happy to be a part of another festival in Chicago.

Orville: I think this has been one of the biggest crowds.

Miss Ammunition: This was a good homey crowd.

Phives: This one was especially special for us because we’re now at a point where we [can} do a lot of collabs with our friends. We had a lot of tracks no one has ever heard before.

Dom: We’re showing our maturity in the industry. We’ve come a long way from having one original song 5 years ago to collaborating with world renowned producers.

Is there an album in the works?

Orville: We’re working on an EP right now.

Dom: We’ve got some ideas. We have some massive collabs on there.
